Cambodia Welcomes Prisoner Amnesty in Myanmar, Urges Progress Toward Reconciliation
AKP Phnom Penh, April 22, 2026 --
Cambodia has welcomed Myanmar’s recent release of prisoners and described the move as a positive step toward dialogue, national reconciliation, and peace.
In a statement issued on the evening of April 22, Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it welcomed the release of prisoners under the Order issued by the President of Myanmar on April 17, 2026 granting amnesty to more than 4,000 individuals, including former President U Win Myint, as well as the commutation of the sentence of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, on the occasion of the Myanmar New Year (Thingyan).
“This move is a positive and significant development consistent with ASEAN's expectations, and helps create a more conducive environment for dialogue and national reconciliation,” the statement underlined. “Cambodia looks forward to further positive steps that build confidence and advance the cause of peace.”
The Ministry added that Cambodia is encouraged by the positive development in Myanmar and strongly hopes that all parties can work together towards a nationwide ceasefire and national reconciliation.
The statement also reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to working together with all fellow ASEAN Member States, guided by the ASEAN Charter and the Five-Point Consensus (5PC), to help Myanmar return to normalcy through a political process that is inclusive, led and owned by Myanmar.
